"Just for Kicks" is a soccer clinic designed for youth players with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. The goal of the clinic is to provide the opportunity for these players to learn some soccer skills, make friends and to participate in an activity with their peers. Each clinic runs Friday afternoons for 8 weeks, spring and fall outdoors, and a winter session indoors.
"Just for Kicks" next clinic begins January 8th 2010 from 3:30 to 4:30 on Fridays at Oliver Woods Community Centre. In the Spring of 2007, Jerry Hannah, coach and volunteer from Nanaimo Youth Soccer began a program for soccer players with special needs. Just for Kicks is a program dedicated to children with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities that allows them to explore the sport of soccer.
The program began with very little fan fair. The program offers 8 week Spring and Fall sessions at Merle Logan Field, then moves indoors at Oliver Woods Community Centre for winter sessions. Jerry has had tremendous success with the program, and the players are really enjoying themselves. The program is called "Just For Kicks", if you are interested in this program, please click on the link to the left under "Just for Kicks".
On behalf of NYSC we thank Jerry for taking this initiative on and creating this program. If you have any questions regarding other programs, or have an idea for a program to open the sport to more people, please email exdirector@nanaimosoccer.ca.
